122. Preliminary Lecture Before the Genesis Lecture Cycle 16 Aug 1910, Munich

Rudolf Steiner
For I may repeat this year at the starting point of our lecture cycle: the most important thing, the most essential thing in such an undertaking, is the hearts of those who have the understanding to take on such a work. That is the great error of our time, that one can believe that a work can be created and that it must have an effect.
That we were able to show this under relatively difficult circumstances was again only possible through the loyal, dedicated work of many of our anthroposophical friends.
And when we have such anticipation, then we will also find the way to restore worn-out words, which today come to people with sentimental values that make it impossible for them to understand their full meaning, to their original light and splendor. But no one will understand the monumental nature of the words that form the starting point of the Bible if he gives the words the character they have today.
107. The Development of Christianity in Present Humanity 15 Feb 1909, Berlin

Rudolf Steiner
And precisely when we study St. Francis of Assisi and cannot understand how, as modern people, we have his conscious ego and yet must have the deepest admiration for his entire emotional world, for everything he did, it becomes understandable from this point of view.
It is most important that we should learn to understand this again and again in the field of spiritual science, that the will to discuss may actually be regarded as a sign of ignorance; on the other hand, we should cultivate the will to learn, the will to gradually understand what is at stake.
Read David Friedrich Strauß. Try to see the way he thinks. Try to understand his train of thought: how he wants to show that the whole life of Jesus of Nazareth is a myth.
277b. The Development of Eurythmy 1918–1920: Eurythmy Address 08 Nov 1919, Dornach

Rudolf Steiner
And a true social life will develop precisely because there will be individuals in the future who will undergo that which leads to discoveries in the spiritual world, and others who will only acquire that development through which one can understand what the researchers of the spiritual world have to communicate.
Now, I know very well all the reasons that such people put forward, who swear by this Kant-Laplacean primeval nebula. I also know that it is quite understandable that when someone speaks as I do, it is portrayed as madness, and that under certain circumstances one can be regarded as a limited mind or even as a delusional person.
You see, what we want to offer you as a piece of the artistic work that is being done here, as a sample of our eurythmy, is basically something that can only be offered if you understand much of what is otherwise only viewed materially, what is otherwise only viewed with the outer senses, if you understand it from the point of view of spiritual knowledge.
193. The Social Question as a Problem of All Humanity 08 Feb 1919, Bern

Rudolf Steiner
And it is in this direction that I would like to deepen our understanding of this topic, which is so relevant to the present day, from an anthroposophical perspective.
It can become completely clear: common sense must be enough to fully understand these things. But to look at them concretely becomes especially possible for those who engage in anthroposophically oriented observation of the world.
This sense of belonging together in brotherhood with other people is what I mainly understand by the spiritual part of economic life. Now, humanity urgently needs an understanding of these things if it wants to escape certain calamities that have arisen precisely because these things have not been taken into account.
79. Jesus or Christ 29 Nov 1921, Oslo

Rudolf Steiner
The gulf between research and the Old and New Testaments is really bridged. A new path to understanding the mystery of Golgotha is being created. Because something is being offered that is now very paradoxical.
Just as the apostles and disciples were still able to rise to the Christ experience through their inheritance from ancient times of clairvoyance, and to understand the resurrection, so too could Paul understand it. But with the spread of the ego, such understanding has increasingly declined.
We therefore also understand what took place after the time of the apostles, the apostolic fathers. We comprehend that struggle, that living struggle through the centuries, under the dying embers of the old knowledge and under the gradual emergence of self-awareness, in order to be able to look at the historical Christ.
161. Wilhelm Jordan as the Renewer of the Nibelungenlied 28 Mar 1915, Dornach

Rudolf Steiner
If we take this from the older saga, we understand the demonic peculiarity of Brunhilde, but we also understand that in the events of the Song of the Nibelungs, something great and more significant is taking place than what can otherwise take place between personalities as personalities in the world.
We must see in Nanna the human soul mourning Baldur, who was connected with her earlier as the power of solar vision, and who now dwells below in the dark realm of Hel, since in man only the gold of the sense mind has remained, which he can only seek with the mind power bound to the brain and the powers of the earth, that is, of sense matter. Only when we understand the whole atmosphere that permeates the Nibelungen saga in this way do we really understand the living forces at work in it. Then we also understand how something in the events can be seen as an extension of what lived in ancient times and what only survived in a faint echo in the people of that time.
156. An Age of Expectation 07 Oct 1914, Dornach

Rudolf Steiner
One has only to realize how diverse human progress is in order to understand what it means that in any age like ours, new forms of beauty, new forms of the whole human soul-attitude, should emerge.
What a wonderful image of the court enthroned in the clouds, under which the nations know themselves! Does not all yearning for the hierarchies, for knowledge of what the hierarchies are for humanity, live in this?
There is only one thing we can do: we can try to let the atrophied etheric body - for it atrophies under today's necessities - move in the eurythmic movements of the physical body, which the gods want.
70a. The Human Soul, Fate and Death: What is Immortal about the Human Being? 12 Mar 1915, Nuremberg

Rudolf Steiner
And if you follow this thought properly, one might say in a soulful way, you come to understand how you must, as it were, grow ever more together with your destiny, how you must recognize what you call your self as a web of destiny.
Even worldviews can only work with memories that the soul stores, and can then bring these memories into a harmonious or logical context, so that we can understand what the soul has before it in everyday life as its final experience, as a memory. So what is memory based on?
In truth, we remember because our body is a mirroring apparatus. Science will fully understand this when it continues on the paths on which all this is hinted at. Then it will also see through the contradictions it raises when such things are presented.
314. On Psychiatry 26 Mar 1920, Dornach

Rudolf Steiner
So that, since abstractions cannot be forces in the world, and therefore cannot be forces in man either, which bring about something, there is also no possibility for man to understand the material, the physical, from the soul, to build some kind of bridge from the psychic to the material.
The one who has the healthy farmer's nature and can tolerate some internal damage may, under certain circumstances, have a much more severe complex within himself, but he can tolerate it and does not become ill.
All these things show that ultimately all the talk about details in the reforms of the individual sciences does not lead to much, but that if one decides – although today souls, many souls, are too sleepy – to in the sense of spiritual science, then the most diverse fields of science, but especially that field of science that deals with the various deviations from normal psychic life, psychiatric medicine, will undergo a necessary, I would say self-evident, reform as a result. Even if these cases go as far as extreme rebellion, raving madness, feeble-mindedness, and so on: only then will it be found what these psychic aberrations actually mean in terms of normal life in the context of normal development.
102. An Outline of Religious Ideas in post-Atlantean Times 13 May 1908, Berlin

Rudolf Steiner
Imagine the Greek temple standing all by itself, inhabited only by the god, and you have the complete picture. This is not to be understood or interpreted symbolically. The devout believer belongs to the Gothic temple. And whoever does not understand space as emptiness, but as permeated by forces, whoever knows that forces crystallize in space and who feels these forces, feels that something has crystallized in the Greek temple from the dynamic forces of the world.
And what later art achieves by expressing the inner in the outer is entirely under the influence of the Christian spiritual current. Basically, it must be said that it is understandable that architecture could become most beautiful where one could still cling with all one's soul to the outer powers that flood through space.
Today, Christianity must be grasped in theosophical depth in order to be able to present itself to people in a new understanding. In the Middle Ages there was still a connection between science and Christianity. Today we need a supersensible deepening of knowledge, of wisdom itself, in order to understand Christianity in its full depth.
